A Day of Rest

Looking back on the past week of blog posts, I think we've done a great job of highlighting the work we've done, the fun we've had as a team, and the areas that the Lord is stretching us through our study in 1 John.  However, we haven't included stories of how the Lord is using our team to bless those around us.  Many of these experiences are personal and we couldn't do them justice through this blog.  Please join us on July 20th to hear testimonies from our team.  There will be great stories of sacrificial love, encouragement through witnessing to God's faithfulness, speaking truth into each others lives, and unity in the Lord!

After breakfast and a study of 1 John 4:7-21, we boarded a bus to Santo Domingo and attended a large church downtown.  The message had to do with the importance of raising children in a Godly manner.  Although our students aren't at that stage yet, we've seen firsthand this week how an encouraging community can aid parents in their calling.  From that perspective, the message was helpful for all of us.

We enjoyed lunch by the water after church.  Some of the more adventurous choices were as follows: Kai ordered Mofongo... we weren't sure what that was at the time, but wikipedia proved very enlightening this evening.  Abby managed to swallow squid, which was more of a success than one might think.  Someone may have overheard her whispering "Just keep chewing.  Just keep chewing" to herself as she ate.  Jeremy tried a local delicacy (see below), which looked like something from the prehistoric era... only fried.

Roberto, one of the history teachers here at the school, led us on a tour of the colonial district of Santo Domingo.  We saw a number of monuments and historical sites, including Christopher Columbus' house, the first church and university in the Americas, and a mausoleum housing national heroes.  Feel free to ask the students about what they found most interesting!

We returned to Juan Tomas in time for the evening church service where Jeremy preached on Genesis 22.  Although the praise music was in Spanish, many of the songs were familiar to our team.  These included "How Great is Our God" and "Holy, Holy, Holy."

Tomorrow morning, our team is heading to the beach along with several families who we have been working and fellowshiping with all week.  Needless to say, we are all pretty excited.  Wish you could join us!
